Windows on Main Street is a unique project combining creative recycling, art and community investment, in Moorestown, New Jersey.

In his backyard shed, Dave Schill—a long-time Moorestonian and professional builder—has amassed a collection of over 50 windows from old Moorestown houses which were being torn down.

As he contemplated clearing out the shed (at his patient wife’s request) he thought about how the windows might be repurposed.

At the same time, the historic Moorestown Community House, a red brick Tudor on Main Street, was mulling its financial future, eager to generate new revenue, but in need of fairly extensive renovations. The facility needs funds to help pay for the newly renovated ballroom.

Windows on Main Street was conceived as a fundraiser by the Moorestown Improvement Association to benefit the Moorestown Community House's renovations.

In early 2010, the windows will leave Dave’s shed in the creative hands of artists.

Inspired by the individually painted and collaged Nipper dogs—which delighted Moorestown residents in 2003—Dave Schill is putting the windows in the hands of painters, sculptors and other artists to see what magic they can work.

Once transformed, the 50 windows will be displayed and then auctioned off to homeowners and businesses, with the proceeds benefitting the Moorestown Community House renovation fund.

The exhibition and auction are planned for May 8, 2010.

Windows on Main is made possible through the generosity and volunteer efforts of numerous community members, artists and businesses.
